  1. The Ultimate 80’s Playlist

I should have graduated high school in 1986. Don’t get me wrong: I love the day and age I live in now. I’m practically hooked up to the Internet via IV drip, and if I was born in ‘68 I’d have missed growing up in this wonderful millennium. The 2000s have a lot going for them: the healthcare’s better, the technology’s better, pretty much everything’s better. But I should’ve graduated high school in 1986. I want to be Molly Ringwald. I want my MTV. Hell, I might even consider wearing a prom dress with shoulder pads.

My mother graduated high school in 1986, and she always tells me I romanticize the decade. This is probably true. Most of my 80’s knowledge is based entirely on pop culture, and that’s no way to form an opinion of an era. All the same, this is not a blog post comparing the social and political ramifications of the decade. This is the Ultimate 80’s Playlist, a collection of the weirdest, most influential and most 80’s.

  3. Top Music Videos – #8: “Love Is A Battlefield” by Pat Benatar

Anyone who knows anything about me knows that I am an 80’s junkie. As I write this, I’m looking at my Breakfast Club poster and wearing leggings. And I really, really want to be Pat Benatar.

I have so many favorite things about this video: the dance break, the adorable relationship with the younger brother, the liberation of the dance hookers. I mean, that’s what they are: dance hookers. They just dance with sleazy guys. And don’t even get me started on the outfits. I would have worn that ridiculous green dress – ripped fishnets and boots and all – to prom.

The best part about this video though? It’s a love song, in a way, but it’s not a music video about love. There’s no gorgeous guy coming to sweep her off her feet and rescue her from the creepy guys with sex offender mustaches and glistening muscles. No, this is an anthem, a celebration of personal strength, a video oozing feminism and badassery. We need another Pat Benatar, stat.
